#HandsOnMetrology
When, in early 2020, GOM asked G-P-U-N-K to help them capture the mid-segment 3D metrology market and adequately position their new products in this hotly contested segment for long-term conquest, we accepted the challenge.
We set up an experienced, highly specialized and hyper-flexible heist crew and together with the specialists from GOM and Zeiss, we developed #HandsOnMetrology, the new home for 3D scanning and metrology.
Using the G-P-U-N-K sprint system, the platform itself was realized in a record breaking time of only 7 weeks and has since become a true content and marketing hub for GOM and Zeiss.
In cooperation with production companies from the US to China, a constantly growing multilingual content pool / media-knowledgebase is filled with answers to every conceivable question about 3D scanning and the products of GOM & Zeiss.
Fueled by lively and well-placed organic social media activities, the platform grew into a serious player in record time. Various marketing materials, frameworks for global adaptations, Packaging designs, trade show booths and a reseller empowerment program , all developed by G-P-U-N-K, make this global platform a powerful success story far beyond digital media.
Now operated by GOM and Zeiss on their own since mid 2021, #HandsOnMetrology is a very successful example of self sustaining marketing Platform.

Supercharged by the
G-P-U-N-K sprint system
Supported by our heist crews market and competitor analyses, position determinations as well as customer and internal interviews by means of several workshops with the specialists of GOM and Zeiss the initial strategy for #HandsOnMetrology was determined.
This was then manifested in an Inception Sprint and used as a guiding principle for the subsequent implementation within only 7 weeks from kick off to launch of the #HandsOnMetrology Plattform.
The basics
We defined the new brand #HandsOnMetrology through a CD/CI born out of digital that could convey the innovative power of GOM and optimally convey the heritage and power of the Zeiss brand core. These guidelines then served as a bible / catechism for the production houses, which were distributed around the globe and added the individual contents to the platform under the creative direction of G-P-U-N-K

Iconography
A simple clear iconography was chosen for quick user guidance
The Imagery
The visual aesthetic of our images is strong, authentic and clear. We work with interesting, authentic men and women, strong positions, strong body language and interesting angles of the working process, reflecting the deep connection between our makers and their work.
Key situations in real-life production environments give us insights on various applications, representing our solution as a natural part of the workflow. Our imagery connects humans and solutions, emotions and technology.
Tone of voice
We created #HandsOnMetrology as a platform for geeks and makers from a wide range of industries – some of them deeper into metrology than others. The challenge for the copy was to appeal to them all. In a nutshell, voice and tonality are all about keeping it clear, direct and approachable. Here are some examples:
Who are we? What’s our personality?
#HandsOnMetrology is an expert you know you can turn to at any time for advice at eye level. Just like you, #HandsOnMetrology is driven by quality and excellence. “Call me John!” is the first thing he says when shaking your hand. Still: #HandsOnMetrology is not a buddy, but rather a colleague from your field of work that you respect a lot: for his technical expertise and his willingness and unique ability to share knowledge. In fact: You truly enjoy his company. Whether you’re head of production or the owner of a workshop: #HandsOnMetrology is known for his approachability at all business/metrology levels.
#HandsOnMetrology is competent, confident, never arrogant and never boasting, always authentic, clear, direct, proactive, inspiring and reliable.
What’s our style?
The #HandsOnMetrology tonality is
competent, informative, technical, clear, direct, approachable
On the platform (and on the #HandsOnMetrology YouTube channel), the user is often addressed with action verbs: e.g. discover, find out, explore, learn, improve etc. In contrast, within the Products section of the platform – in order to avoid coming across as too salesman-like – the focus is on the product and how it can meet the user’s needs: e.g. designed to help you..., made to maximize your...
Video headlines and video descriptions (on the platform and on YouTube) are in the same #HandsOnMetrology tonality.
Perspective
On #HandsOnMetrology, the focus is on the movers and makers that are featured on the platform – not the people behind it. That’s why the platform is written about in the 3rd person singular (“it”), e.g. Welcome to #HandsOnMetrology, the platform to … Verbs relating to #HandsOnMetrology must therefore also be in the 3rd person singular.
Users are addressed with “you” and “your”.
Whenever suitable, e.g. in the About Us section, there’s a subtle shift in perspective:
“We at #HandsOnMetrology”.
Also, when it’s time to take action and get personal, users are asked to e.g. contact us.
Grammar & Syntax
Headlines
Capitalize only the first word in sentence case
No period at the end
e.g.

Move it: dynamic measurements
Syntax
Shorter rather than longer sentences, action verbs, no passive
Use of “international” English that’s globally understood, American spelling
A Tailormade
global content
production network
For the heart of HandsOnMtrology, the training / university / knowledge area we creatd over 120 Videos and live striped keynotes, tutorials, recorded keynotes, product demos, event Streams Q&A how-to’s, all around the topic 3D scanning.
Maker Portraits
We created the Maker Portraits, to celebrate the movers and shakers, the cutting-edge innovators and creators, engineers and technicians who are burning for their ideas, their job and their products. We focused on the technicians rather than the CEO. On the makers: the ones that are hands-on. The people who use #HandsOnMetrology products to achieve the mutual goal: precision, accuracy and the never ending pursuit for quality and excellence.
Getting started
With the getting started we created a series of videos on getting to know the basics. They can be understood as digital manuals for new product users: They cover unboxing, the set-up, software updates and the scanning the first surface. A #HandsOnMetrology expert in the #HandsOnMetrology workbench studio guides us through the video. Various steps are highlighted by typography/motion-design.
The How To series
HOW TO is a series of short videos that cover very specific use cases. A 3D Scanning expert shows applications that people would specifically search for.
One Minute Insights
With the One Minute Insights we created short videos in which experienced users / makers as well as GOM and ZEISS technicians , developers etc. talk about various hacks , tricks or a specific feature of the product / software . They speak directly to the audience from their real workplace and show the product / software feature .
Commercials
Promotional films for the new product range based on #HandsOnMetrology that work in the visual field of tension between GOM and Zeiss.
Internationalization and scalability through simple multilingual frameworks
To optimally support the international scalability of the contet, we developed frameworks for each format living on the platform. These act as an instruction manual for media production and enable external production houses to produce and publish on brand content in the shortest possible time.
The international Plattform
Using the G-P-U-N-K sprint system, the content Multi language platform itself was realized in a record breaking time of only 7 weeks and has since become a true content and marketing hub for GOM and Zeiss.
Social Media
For an optimal support in the social channels we developed a social media campaign which was fueled by one of our social media teams. The reach of the platform was brought to a competitive level in a very short time, almost exclusively organically, and has since been functioning at a high level and turnover as a lively #HandsOnMetrology exchange channel with the 3D scanning community.
GOM Scan1 Packaging
For the new product line on #HandsOnMetrology GOM Scan 1, a contemporary packaging was developed that combines aspects of sustainability, durability as well as an outstanding unpacking experience.
#HandsOnMetrology on the CIMT
For the CIMT 2021 trade fair in China, an exhibition stand was developed for #HandsOnMetrology and its products that fits seamlessly between the exhibition areas of the parent companies GOM and Zeiss. #HandsOnMetrology thus also acts as a link and bridge between the two brand worlds and their portfolios in the analog space. Special attention was paid to the reusability of the elements and the sustainability of the entire concept.
